Aurealis Mixie - Stereo to Mono Passive

The Aurelais Mixie is a small box with a passive resistor network that provides superior imagining on mono recordings played with a stereo cartridge.  It is available in standard and premium versions.  The premium version includes Takman resistors and low mass genuine copper RCA sockets.

The Aurealis Mixie allows the user to play mono records with their favourite stereo cartridge. It is an alternative to spending a lot of money on a mono cartridge to get the same standard of reproduction already provided by your stereo cartridge. The Mixie combines the two stereo channels and then splits them in identical left and right channel mono.

Further technical details are provided at the bottom of the page.

Some Technical Details -Aurealis Mixie

While some people use a Y-cable to combine stereo signals into a mono signal, Y-cables are not an effective means of achieving the best imaging from mono recordings. The use of a Y-cable in this way results in the left and right channel interfering with each others' signal paths. For example: The left channel input will run along the output of the Y-cable and also run along the input of the right channel. This means the left channel will treat the right channel input as an output channel at the join of the Y-cable. The end result is that the left channel signal travels up the right channel input wire and the right channel signal travels up the left channel input wire. This is not good for the stability of the source device and not good for the integrity of the musical signal.

The Aurealis Mixie uses a resistor network to significantly reduce the feedback between left and right channels. This results in greater device stability and a superior mono signal.

The input impedance of the Aurealis Mixie is around 10 kOhms and the output impedance 2 kOhms. The Aurealis Mixie can be used as follows:

For moving magnet cartridges:

  • between turntable outputs and Phono stage amplifier

  • from phono stage amplifier to pre-amp or integrated amp inputs

  • between pre-amp and power amp- where the impedances match. (Pre-amp output impedance is 1 kOhm or less, and power amp input impedance > 20 kOhm)

For moving coil cartridges, the Mixie should be used so it does not interfere with the cartridge loading:

  • from phono stage amplifier to pre-amp or integrated amp inputs

  • between pre-amp and power amp- where the impedances match. (Pre-amp output impedance is 1 kOhm or less, and power amp input impedance > 20 kOhm)

Due to the resistor network used there will be some decrease in the amplification of the signal at the output from the Aurealis Mixie. This can be easily compensated by adjusting the volume control.
